The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
The Bible indeed does tell us to fear God. That doesn't mean that we're to be in terror or Him, shrinking from Him and even fleeing from Him, although we should fear His judgment. It does mean we are to have a reverence and respect for Him, knowing that He is holy and all powerful. At its most basic element, “the fear of the LORD” is the ability to see and appreciate God as He really is all His moral attributes (love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, patience, justice, holiness and righteousness)
In essence, choosing to walk in the fear of the Lord is a personal decision. It means honouring God in everything and making Him a priority in life. Those who do so are easily recognisable.
